Despite a crazy end of season practice schedule, we had a lot of success in our last meet of the year. A great number of swimmers were still achieving personal bests in a majority of their events, which is often difficult at the end of a season after they've already dropped so much time during the season. We also had several swimmers who broke records this season. Our Record Breakers are listed below. Congratulations!
Thank you for your enthusiasm, focus, and dedication this season. You guys rock! We couldn't have accomplished half our goals without your involvement and support. We'd also like to send out a special thanks to all parents who sent in pictures throughout the season, helped plan and set up our special events, and helped carpool swimmers to J.A. Walters. You all help us feel like we're part of something special, a Barracuda family. Thank you for a fantastic season! We hope to see you back this summer!

A big congratulations to the Barracudas who participated in this weekend's Pentathlon at Frances Meadows. Our team did really well, with a good number of you placing in the top eight in your events and a few of you placing in the top three overall in your age groups, earning medals! Eliya Williams won her 100 IM heat by nearly half a pool while dropping 20 seconds, and it was Sabien Lively's first time swimming the 200 IM and 100 Fly! Top 3 Overall 1st for 7 & Under: Alina Inthavong 1st for 13 Year Olds: Megan Lance 1st for 14 Year Olds: Daniel Morales 3rd for 14 Year Olds: Kendall Diehl Coach Meredith and I were especially impressed with all the time drops given our funky practice schedule this week. You guys rock! Thank you for your flexibility while we work to repair and improve the indoor pool.
Also, a giant thank you to J.A. Walters YMCA for their hospitality this past week. I strongly encourage those of you who traveled with us to Gainesville to check out the previous blog post and send them a thank you of your own. Rest In Pump As most of you know, the indoor pool pump has pumped its last and will be fondly remembered by all those who swam in the indoor pool between last Monday and the pool's opening in 2010. In its wake, however, the J.A. Walters YMCA was kind enough to let us use their facility - free of charge this is huge - while we await the replacement pump. We coaches would like to take the time to thank the J.A. Walters YMCA for their extreme generosity and lightning-fast acquiescence to our needs during our frenzied pre-meet panic. If you attended practice at J.A. Walters this week and would like to take the time to thank them as well, please feel free to send an email of your own. It doesn't have to be long, just include some good feels. (You can use the "General Inquiry" form or use the drop-down menu to select "Georgia Mountains YMCA - CEO.") It's super easy and only takes a few seconds. Support our Y Family! The Age Group State Championship was held this weekend at Georgia Tech. We had three swimmers compete this season: Makala Dhabolt, Alexis Doherty, and Spencer Smith. All three swimmers had an amazing weekend, getting better and better with each day of competition, and it was Makala Dhabolt's first State Meet ever! Alexis swam some incredible races, including the two times she swam a 1:00 in the 100 Free. Spencer swam the maximum number of events in his age group and consistently dropped time in everything!
We are so proud of our State swimmers and we can't wait to bring them back (along with some new faces) next year!
Top Row: Spencer Smith, Coach Meredith Green, Coach Caitlyn Hentenaar // Middle Row: Emma Barley, Mary Murdock, McKayla Yancey, Alina Inthavong, Makayla Dhabolt, Jenna Crow // Third Row: Lauren Green, Elizabeth Carpenter, Jocelyn Carpenter, Mia Bates, Daniel Hernandez // Bottom Row: Aina Zvirbulis, Charlie Souther, David Carruth Coming off the tail of the holiday season, the L.A. Qualifier was an interesting meet for our team. The coaches could really tell the difference in the swimmers who showed up focused and ready to compete using all the techniques and strategies we have been working on in practice. Getting towards the end of the season, it's becoming more and more difficult to drop time in every event, every meet, but we are still seeing great performances from all our swimmers. Keep up the hard work!
We had some amazing swims and some that weren't as amazing, but, focusing on the positive... overall, our long distance swims were fantastic. We also had a lot of swimmers compete in some difficult events they had never swum before, such as Mary Murdock in the 100 Fly, Kelly Koistinen in the 200 Free, Chloe Barry in the 200 Back, and Daniel Morales in the 200 Fly. We've got two more meets left this season! Keep up the hard work and make each meet better than the last! South Pole Discovery // Bottom Row: Charlie Souther, Aina Zvirbulis, Elizabeth Carpenter, Makayla Dhabolt, Alina Inthavong, Spencer Smith, Daniel Hernandez // Top Row: Mia Hernandez, Coach Meredith Green, Merrideth Wood, McKayla Yancey, Coach Caitlyn Hentenaar, Jenna Crow, Trevor Maddox, Sabien Lively (*Photo provided by the Inthavong family) Things really accumulated around the holiday season! Since our last post, we've had not one, not two, but three invitational meets (L.A. Winter Invite, South Pole Discovery Invitational and Augusta Winter Invite). There have been so many highlights, time drops, and state qualifying swims, Coach Meredith and I can barely keep track! Our swimmers have been amazing about focusing and working hard to achieve their goals this swim season. These goals will become even more important as we continue to hurtle on towards the Northeast Divisional Championship at the end of March. With the L.A. Qualifier on deck, we thought it might be nice to list the swimmers who have already achieved qualifying times in order to recognize them as well as motivate our swimmers to keep stepping it up at our next meet. First, a word of congratulations to all our Barracuda swimmers on their outstanding performances. Coach Meredith and I were so proud of your focus and improvement. A special congrats goes out to Kelly Koistenin on her first swim meet ever! Her nerves backed down quickly, and she rocked her events. Also, Jacob Costantino participated in his first year round meet ever this past weekend. He was so cool and confident that we didn't realize until halfway through the day that he had never been to a sanctioned meet before. Some other meet highlights:
Now that we are two meets in, we are working on setting new goals or amending old ones from last month and evaluating our long-term goals for the season. Make sure you keep your goal sheets where you can look them over. Write them on your bathroom mirror! Staple them in your agenda! Tape them to your bedroom door! Do whatever you need to do to make sure they are visible and referable. *Pictured: Shelby Edling, Mia Hernandez, Alina Inthavong, Coach Caitlyn Hentenaar, Eliya Williams, Coach Meredith Green, Mia Bates, Makayla Dhabolt, Katherine Inthavong (Photo provided by the Inthavongs) Our first meet of the season was held at the GA Tech pool. As many of you will recall from how often we repeated it, this was the pool that held the 1996 Olympic swims! How awesome was it to swim in a pool that made history?! For quite a few of our swimmers, it was their first year round meet and for some of our swimmers, Eliya Williams and Mia Bates, this was their first swim meet ever. We're glad it went swimmingly. Being the first meet of the season, we coaches expected some great improvements on times from last season or the summer season, but we can say we were pleasantly surprised at how many of you dropped HUGE amounts of time. To give you an idea of just how much time our swimmers shaved we give you the... TOP TEN BIGGEST TIME DROPS PER 25
We are looking forward to our next meet at Lanier! Keep up the great work!
Happy New Year Round Season! We're well into our third week of our 2012-2013 year round season and things (and swimmers) are really shaping up! We have 41 swimmers on roster this season, and we hope to gain a few more as the season continues.
Welcome to all our new year round faces: Mia Bates Helena Cadavid Victoria Cadavid Jocelyn Carpenter Jacob Costantino Shelby Edling Jay Fulford Kelly Koistinen Sabien Lively Marc Moody Abigail Negru Charlie Souther Eliya Williams 2012 Summer Season Wrap-Up Team records were broken, amazing State swims were swum, and personal bests were shattered this summer by our fantastic Barracuda swimmers. The Summer of 2012 shaped up to be a pretty eventful season for everyone! Thanks to our parents and our amazing Booster Club, the Barracuda Banquet was a huge success as well! A big thanks to Mr. Hernandez for capturing and copying pictures from State onto DVDs for the State Team and to the Chandler family for providing us with mouth-watering BBQ deliciousness. Seriously, we couldn't do anything awesome or fun without the support of our parents. You guys are the best. Well, the Summer must be officially over seeing as we've all been back in school for a few weeks now. What better way to avoid admitting the summer is over than to stay in the pool for our year round season!? If you (or your swimmers) are interested, check out the 2012 Registration page on our site for more information. 2012 Summer State Team
